Team True Spirit's Story
Team True Spirit - Lakeland 50/100 Challenge
Team True Spirit is a charity dedicated to supporting the rehabilitation and wellbeing of injured service personnel, veterans, and their families through physical activity, adventure, and community support.
This year, members of Team True Spirit are taking on the gruelling Lakeland 50 and Lakeland 100, one of the UK's toughest ultra-distance endurance events. Covering challenging terrain through the Lake District, participants will push themselves both physically and mentally to raise awareness and vital funds for the charity's ongoing work.
Every mile completed represents the resilience, determination, and spirit shown by those who have faced adversity through injury, illness, and life-changing circumstances. By supporting Team True Spirit, you are helping provide opportunities for recovery, personal development, and renewed purpose for those who have served.
Together, we continue to prove that no challenge is too great when faced as a team.
Team True Spirit – “The Let’s Run Round”
9 May 2026 – Event Report
On Saturday 9 May, Team True Spirit delivered an alternative endurance event, “The Let’s Run Round,” in place of the traditional Yorkshire Three Peaks challenge. Due to a prolonged road closure between Hawes and Ingleton, access to the usual route would have required a significant detour for participants travelling from North Yorkshire and the North East. An alternative was identified via a local running initiative based in Great Ayton, where mapped routes are accessed via QR code and linked directly to Strava.
The chosen route was a circular course of approximately 29 miles, taking in Roseberry Topping, Captain Cook's Monument, Kildale, and extensive sections of the Cleveland Way, including the notable ascents of Clay Bank, the Wainstones, and Lordstones.
Participation numbers were lower than anticipated due to the change in location and late withdrawals; however, seven committed participants assembled at 0600hrs in Great Ayton to undertake the challenge.
The initial intent was to complete the route at a steady “tabbing” pace over approximately 9–10 hours. This plan quickly evolved, with the group naturally progressing into a mix of tabbing and steady running from early in the route. The ascent of Roseberry Topping provided an immediate physical test, described by the team as short but steep, before continuing along the Cleveland Way towards Captain Cook’s Monument.
Weather conditions were typically unpredictable for the North York Moors, with low cloud, fine drizzle, and persistent wind limiting visibility at higher elevations. Despite this, the team maintained strong progress, descending into Kildale before undertaking the sustained climb back onto the moorland ridge.
At Bloworth Crossing, two participants departed early due to prior commitments, having contributed positively to the early stages of the event. The remaining group continued along the Cleveland Way, where conditions briefly improved, revealing views across the surrounding valleys as cloud cover lifted.
The route’s most demanding section came with the descent into Clay Bank and subsequent climb, which tested physical capacity across the group. Despite accumulated fatigue, participants demonstrated high levels of resilience, maintaining pace and cohesion. This standard continued through the technical terrain of the Wainstones and onwards to Lordstones, before a steep descent into the valley.
The final phase of the route consisted of a prolonged return section via mixed terrain back towards Stokesley and into Great Ayton. The team completed the route in a total moving time of 7 hours and 46 minutes.
On completion, participants were recognised locally for their efforts and concluded the day with a group debrief, reinforcing the positive and supportive team environment that underpinned the event.
Summary
The “Let’s Run Round” event covered approximately 29 miles across mixed terrain in variable weather conditions, including low cloud, wind, and light drizzle. Despite reduced numbers, all participants who undertook the full route completed it successfully, with a total moving time of 7 hours and 46 minutes. The event highlighted the physical demands of sustained endurance activity across technical terrain, particularly during the climbs at Clay Bank and along the Cleveland Way. Strong team cohesion, adaptability, and mutual support were evident throughout, with participants maintaining pace despite fatigue and environmental challenges.
